Scripture for the Week: 1 Corinthians 13
Since we began the season of Lent, we’ve been dwelling on the importance of listening. I think we understand “listening” intellectually, but there’s really a lot to it. Those who are in helping professions or even in the business field of marketing know the importance of listening and of continually honing one’s listening skills. One of Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is “seek first to understand, then to be understood.”
Can you imagine a doctor, lawyer, therapist, pastor, parent, or business person who doesn’t listen?
One of the advantages of congregations is that they are like family.
One of the disadvantages of congregations is that they are like family.
It can be easier to listen to others outside the congregation than those inside. As we get to know one another, we begin to assume what they will say and the reasoning behind their positions.
This week, read the Scripture for the week every day. Read it thoughtfully. We’ve all heard this Scripture known as the “love chapter.” As you read, read with listening in mind. Consider what difference it makes if you replace the word “love” with “listening.”
How do you listen in your congregation. Who do you tend to listen and pay attention to? Who do you not listen to? Why? Are there preferences or biases that you have that get in the way of you listening to others in your congregation?
Taking it deeper…
As you read the Scriptures this week, write down at least one thing you believe God is calling you to do this week.
