Devotion: Sharing?

We know that being a Christian is not just about winning our own salvation, and, once that’s “done” – checked off the list – then we can go on about our lives, occasionally going to church or doing something good and charitable so that, at the end of our lives, people can say that we lived a pretty good life and that we’re experiencing the goodness of God in life everlasting.

Isn’t there more to life and more to faith than that?

As I look back at my sermons and teaching recently, I really have felt led to focus on our faith moving us to action, and the necessity of sharing our faith. Quick … without over-thinking this, what immediately comes to mind when you think of sharing and acting on your faith?

Being people of faith is a way of life. It informs everything we do.
Sharing faith is much more than walking up to a complete stranger and telling them about Jesus. Sharing faith happens in our common everyday interactions with our families, co-workers, and fellow church members. Sharing faith is about relationship. Sharing faith is about encouraging believers and unbelievers alike. Sharing is joyful!
There is enough sharing in our world that brings people down and is destructive and divisive. For some reason, many people are drawn to this kind of sharing.

As people of faith, let’s commit ourselves to being people who others rejoice to see.

How can you share this week? I’d love to hear about what you try, what you do, what happens, and what challenges you experience.

“For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” (Romans 10:12-18).

This Week

  • Read the Scripture from Romans (above) each day.
  • Where did you first hear the gospel in a meaningful way?
  • When you think about sharing the faith (not in general or abstract concepts or theories, but you personally) do you have an idea or image of what that would be like?
    • Do you already do this or do you think it is possible for you?
    • What prevents you or frightens you about this?
