Devotion: Wilderness Wandering and Spiritual Assessment

V-Icon_Ch06_Grapes

After spending 6 weeks dwelling with The Story, how do you feel?

Just like the road trip we talked about Sunday morning in worship, the beginning of The Story has been exciting as we see the possibilities ahead for us this year. You may have found that The Story hasn’t been what you expected. You may have found that The Story has been refreshing and just what the doctor ordered. Even though I have been a pastor for 11 years, attended 4 years of seminary, and have been a Christian all my life, I am really enjoying The Story and I’m learning a lot. A big part of my learning is because we’re doing this as a whole congregation. I love the conversations and questions we’ve been having about the Bible, about who God is, and about what God is doing in our lives. I’m being drawn into God’s Story in a way I never have before.

Like the Israelites, we are on a journey. They were traveling from Egypt to the Promised Land with a whole lot of wandering in between. We are moving – sometimes wandering – through our lives.

For this week’s devotion, I would like to continue the exercise we began in worship. Use the map below of the traditional route of the Exodus and use it as a way to understand your own spiritual life. Where would you place yourself: in bondage in Egypt, ready to leave Egypt but afraid of what lies ahead, wandering in the wilderness, about to cross over into the Promised Land, in the Promised Land?

Consider also where Bethel is.

Where is God calling you?

Where is God calling Bethel?

Are we moving where God is calling? If we’re stuck or headed in a different direction, how do we realign the story of our lives with God’s story? How can we trust God more today than we did yesterday?
