Chairman Stewart, members of the Board, fellow citizens. It is good to be here tonight.

Almighty God, we give you thanks for those who serve in public office, especially today we give you thanks for the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and all who work with them to help them govern the people of this county. It is a difficult task, and critics abound.
Bless them, we pray, as they do their work and engage in deliberations regarding a budget that will guide the spending of this county. While we must deal with the cold, hard dollars and cents, we know that there are people behind each penny. Behind each penny are the businesses and citizens whose taxes and fees constitute the income of this county – those who work hard for their money and want to see it used well. Behind each penny are the people who benefit from community services and projects of the magnitude that can only be accomplished when we join each of our pennies together. And we make decisions about where these pennies will go based on our values as leaders and as a community. All faith traditions call us individually and collectively to care for the poor and most vulnerable among us.
So, Almighty God, we pray your blessings upon these elected leaders and all who live and work in this community. May we strive to work together for the good of all. Bless and guide the Supervisors in their decision-making, that they may have free minds and open hearts to lead with wisdom, charity and justice. Give all who gather here today good and thoughtful questions and even vigorous debate that does not diminish ourselves or those whom we address. Help our elected leaders use their authority to serve faithfully and to promote our common life; through your Holy Name we pray.
