How long, O Lord?!

Today, we experienced yet another school shooting – this time, in Santa Fe, TX.

Honestly … what to say that hasn’t already been said? Today, we’ve added 9 students and 1 teacher to the growing numbers of those killed in school shootings.

My heart hurts for the children who saw classmates shot and killed in Santa Fe, TX. For parents, for neighbors, for first responders. We have to think and pray … definitely. What we can’t be is complacent because complacency is complicity.

This may not happen in our community, but it could. This is very close to where my good friend grew up and not far from where I did. Many of us don’t know these families, but these children are our children because what affects one affects all of us (e pluribus unum).

Can we please not divide into political camps, entrench ourselves, and point fingers?

Can we please have meaningful and difficult conversations in which we listen to each other?

Can we PLEASE move the conversation from political posturing toward meaningful action?

Or have we lost hope of a future where the current trajectory of increasing violence is reversed so our children and teachers can go to school to learn?

How long, O Lord, will we wrangle with one another, dance around the issues and flirt with action?

One response to “How long, O Lord?!”

  1. As for your statement that it hasn’t happened in our community, I believe that it is only a matter of time…No community is immured ….I keep hearing, yet again, that the powers that be will get together to discuss how to remedy this type of tragedy… (like you already said what is it,that hasn’t been said ….I think the students (who are pro-active ) have the correct response … Now is the time for action (not words) Not that we should March (showing solidarity, but rather come together as a community to attack as many angles of the problem as we can….

That having been said, we can and should discuss what we can do in our community of PWC, Manassas City and Manassas Park to include the police, first respondents, council members of each community, school board members of all 3 jurisdiction , principals, teachers, etc., mental health workers and correctional departments for youths and adults, parents and the children themselves, as well as other churches… to bombard as many ideas as possible…

we may or may not be able to march with the youth of today, but we can (hopefully ) come up with a plan of Safety, a plan for deterrence, and a weapons plan for our community (just like Takoma Park, Md. allows no hazardous or nuclear materials to pass through their community)

I am not recommending an easy task… we need to meet in small groups and then come together (as one body) to present all ideas and then act upon those that have been selected …. the objective is to keep our children and school grounds safe!
