Cooking across the miles on Zoom

I’ve got a complicated yet wonderful family life. With my parent’s divorce and subsequent remarriage to partners with their own children, my sibling count has expanded from 1 to 6! We actually all get along and enjoy each other’s company.

So, when one of my brothers suggested getting together on Zoom for conversation and a meal, I thought that was the coolest thing! My brother, Mark, is amazing in the kitchen and has a real gift for hospitality. Last year at a family reunion, he made a salsa that was so very good with the right amount of spice and sweet and acid from the tomato.

The menu for our first Zoom cook was:

Layered Chicken Three-Cheese Enchilada (recipe link). I cooked my chicken on my large Big Green Egg with just salt and pepper on 375° for about 45 minutes.

Homemade enchilada sauce (recipe link).

The salsa (recipe link – just use the salsa part – see picture below).

Kurt’s salsa

While on some level, the purpose of this gathering was about food, we really enjoyed getting to be a part of each other’s daily lives even for a moment. It’s very different being together in one of the vacation homes we’ve rented over the years. In our own homes, we were in our own elements. We were surrounded by our kitchens, families, and the sounds of our homes.

My wife, Vicki, and my other brother, Kurt, provided great conversation as we all chopped, stirred, and blended.

In this time of global pandemic and isolation, relationships and connections are even more important and necessary. What better way to connect than through food.
